Jim

My freshman year in high school, my guidance counselor said I should be in the trades. I went on to receive a Bachelor’s degree in foreign relations at Northern Illinois University but then followed her advice and became a carpenter. I was lucky enough to work with family members and was able to learn through trial and error every facet of carpentry and woodworking. I run a one-man shop dedicated to making furniture that is one of a kind and yet still affordable to everyone. I believe that no one needs to buy poorly made furniture, out of poor material, for their home. I use traditional and contemporary methods*, depending on what type of piece I'm making. All of my work is finished by hand. The finishes are very durable, yet easy to fix, friendlier to the environment and to you. **

Most of my work is one-of-a-kind pieces and units, but I'm in the process of making a line of Arts and Crafts and Shaker pieces to be available for order. These two types of furniture fit my way of thinking the best. I believe something should be very functional but at the same time ascetically wonderful to look at. I appreciate how things are made and try to do justice to people who gave us the designs. The photos on this web site should give you an impression of what I do. I invite you to not be limited by these and am eager to design you a one-of-a-kind piece of furniture, entertainment center, custom kitchen and more that is unique to your home.

*Traditional methods include solid wood throughout with mortise and tenon joints, hand cut dovetails. I use woodworking machinery but use a fair amount of hand tools. Contemporary methods would be the use of hardwood plywood to cut cost and time. Kitchen cabinets and entertainment centers, bookcases etc. are examples of this. I always use hardwood edging. I never use edge banding. **I use water based stain, and polyurethane. I also use shellac and wipe on polyurethane. I encourage the use of domestic hardwoods and managed hardwoods from the rainforest.
